Welcome From the President

Jean Guy LevaqueDear RCI Members, Friends, and Colleagues:

What a difference 30-plus years makes! Since its foundation in 1983, RCI has seen a steady increase in interest in our convention, attracting best-in-class educational programs and an unprecedented industry trade show. This year is no exception!

As the convention shifts to Orlando, Florida, at the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek Resort, our theme of Making Connections will be front and center throughout all the scheduled events. I will be pleased to welcome you this year and invite you to take part in the varied programs available. The entire program can be found online here.

As an international association, RCI is privileged to highlight, at our Opening Ceremony on Saturday, a Canadian keynote speaker: astronaut, engineer, and pilot Colonel Chris Hadfield. A commander of the International Space Station, he has been inducted into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame. Hadfield's many accomplishments, including working for NASA for several years and being closely involved with the international space program, bring a unique perspective on the Canada/U.S. bond—very much what RCI is all about.

The Convention Committee and professional staff have done an outstanding job of selecting educational programs and providing an impressive lineup of speakers and subjects. The variety of topics will challenge any interest. The committee reviewed numerous abstracts, and as a result, twenty-three seminars will be available, and two Auxiliary Seminars will be offered for more in-depth analysis of current building envelope issues.

The Convention kicks off Friday, March 11, with the President-Elect's Golf Tournament (on site at Shingle Creek Resort). Friday night will offer a reception for first-time attendees and emerging professionals. These events are ideal for our theme of Making Connections.

Spouses and convention guests will also have opportunities to get together for some exciting outings on Friday and Monday. Be sure to let your spouse or guest know about these activities, and register early, because they always fill up.

Our industry Trade Show begins Saturday and runs through Sunday. A record number of vendors is registered, and the show is always regarded as among the best in the industry, where the quality of connections is paramount. Frequent product demonstrations are scheduled, and Saturday night is capped off with the exhibitors' hospitality receptions—great opportunities to meet friends and enjoy good times, refreshments and entertainment.

The RCI Foundations' Reception and Auction on Sunday is a must event on your convention calendar. Bring your credit card or checkbook and support the Foundations' efforts to advance the knowledge of the building envelope through funded publications, educational programs, and research grants.

The Annual Meeting of the Members on Monday will allow us to address the business side of RCI and the election of our officers and leaders. And please join me that evening for the President's Reception and Banquet.

I expect this year's convention to be one of our best, following a record-setting attendance at last fall's RCI Building Envelope Symposium held in Nashville, Tennessee.

I sincerely hope to see you there! Let us make worthwhile and long-lasting connections!

RCI President

Message from the Executive Vice President and CEO

James Birdsong

Dear RCI Members and Friends,

It is time to make your reservations for Orlando! March is quickly approaching, and I'm sure you don't want to miss the 31st RCI International Convention & Trade Show at the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in sunny Orlando, Florida.

This convention is the ONE event that has become the annual gathering occasion for building envelope professionals. We look forward to having you join us for outstanding education, entertaining social events, and great opportunities for networking and sharing with other professionals in the industry.

I am sure you'll share my excitement that our keynote speaker will be astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield, Canadian Air Force (retired). You may know Colonel Hadfield as the first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station, as well as a best-selling author, engineer, and NASA's Director of Operations in Russia. Or, maybe you have been one of the literally hundreds of millions of people to watch his rendition of David Bowie's Space Oddity.

Once again, we are responding to your feedback and continuing the successful innovations from last year. These include our free convention app with every detail of the 31st RCI International Convention & Trade Show (available for free download at the iTunes Store and Google Play for Android), auxiliary seminars on Friday rather than Tuesday, and Sunday morning trade show cash awards (you must be present to win).

The auxiliary seminars on Friday are The Future of the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone…Built on a Foundation of Performance and Litigation Support Services for Building Envelope Experts. The new Friday schedule for these potentially eliminates a day you have to be away from the office.

The trade show will open its doors on Saturday, March 12, immediately following the opening ceremony. On Sunday, March 13, trade show doors will open with a hot breakfast waiting – come for the education and networking opportunities, and enjoy the breakfast and cash awards as an added bonus!

The RCI Foundations' annual auction will be held Sunday evening. This is a great place to start your evening enjoying a drink or two with fellow convention attendees while finding an item for yourself or that special someone in your life. Once again it will start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 7:00 p.m., so you will have the opportunity to support the Foundations and still be able to join friends or clients for dinner.

Finally, join us on Monday evening to enjoy the sounds of the Heather Rice Quartet in the new RCI Reservoir Lounge South and Supper Club. Heather Rice is a soulful singer-songwriter who has recently opened for Joan Osborn, Lee DeWyze, and Sheryl Crow.

Your RCI staff and volunteer leaders have been working all year to bring you the best convention to date. Please join us at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in March. We're looking forward to seeing you!

À bientôt!

James R. Birdsong
